Around Australia, Queensland's Gold Coast, particularly Surfers Paradise, remains the largest single venue, attracting tens of thousands of schoolies. The Schoolies festival on the Gold Coast, Queensland is an iconic event celebrated by Year 12 high school leavers from around Australia. It takes place every year between mid-November and mid-December at Surfers Paradise and is a chance for graduating students to let their hair down and party.
Traditionally Schoolies is held over a three week period, with each week attracting students from a different Australian state - namely Queensland, NSW and Victoria. The event is mainly held on the Gold Coast but destinations such as Byron Bay, Sunshine Coast, Airlie Beach, Tropical North QLD and Magnetic Island are also popular with schoolies.
Thousands of school leavers from around Australia, as well as New Zealand, hang out in and around Surfers Paradise during Schoolies week, where free beach parties and concerts are held nightly.
Most schoolies stay in high-rise apartments in Surfers Paradise, while some venture to the surrounding suburbs of Main Beach and Broadbeach. Accommodation sells out quickly during the schoolies period, so it's wise to book early to get a good location.
Because many schoolies are under the legal drinking and can’t enter nightclubs, various underage events are held on the Surfers Paradise beaches including dance parties, concerts and movie screenings.
NSW and Victorian schoolies are usually older, many being between 18 to 19 year old, and an estimated 10,000 of them celebrate their graduation in popular Gold Coast nightclubs.
A team of more than 350 support volunteers patrol the beach and streets giving out advice, information, walking teens home and just generally helping.
Police officers patrol the party precinct throughout the event, with schoolies facing fines for underage drinking. Police are also on the lookout for Toolies causing trouble, with the majority of arrests at Schoolies being people over the school-leaving age.
